RED hydraulic winches are all about quality and ultimate reliability without compromise. They are manufactured in Somerset, about 10 miles from us. Every component in the winch is manufactured within a 30 mile radius of us. This includes all the specialist processes such as gear cutting, hardening processes and finishing processes such as anodising.

The winches have undergone extensive UK military testing and are now fitted to various serving military vehicles right up to 12 tonnes in weight.

Here at First Four, we have worked together with RED Winches during the winch and drive-system development, and we are now able to present and supply the full 3-winch range, now that the extensive research and development period has been completed. These are fantastic, fully British-designed-and-built winches and represent a huge leap forward in British-manufactured winch design.
   
             

The serious winch user can now enjoy a professional highly engineered high-performance, yet compact winch, capable of operating in the most demanding situations and environments. As they have been designed and built to withstand extensive testeing and the severest use in the field, they are entirely dependable. RED winches are manufactured in the UK to the very highest engineering standards using state of the art high precision machining methods and materials, and to enable you to fit a complete reliable hydraulic winch system we have also developed the very best choice of drive-systems available. Hydraulics The winches are driven by a powerful hydraulic motor. A choice of solenoid or lever control-valve can be supplied to control the winch. Remote control of the solenoid valve is also available via a ‘Lodar’ remote unit.

Drive Systems Their are a choice of three drive systems. 1. Engine mounted ZF74 hydraulic pump for economy. 2. Enging mounted high performace pump with toothed belt sprocket and belt system, for maximum performance. 3. Transfer-Gearbox mounted power take off (PTO) and pump, also for maximum performance.

Winch Gearbox. Single speed planetary gearbox with fully integrated hardened gears. Gear Ratio:6:1 on the Challenger and Terrier, 6:1 and 1:1 on the Warrior

Drum. The winch drum is unpainted on the core to support the 'capstan' effect performed on the drum by the rope tightening under load’. During trials this has been shown to give a much better long lasting grip onto the drum. A minimum of nine (9) wraps ofthe drum must be seen on the first layer before winching under load. The standard drum  will atke 38metres of 12mm synthetic rope. But there is also a long-drum option available to accept 46metres of 12mm rope if required. Fairleads are available to match the long drum.

Brake. The winches can be supplied with a mechanical brake unit fitted on the motor, adding even more control, or more commonly. with a load sensing over-centre valve within the hydraulic system. Please ask for more details if this option is required.
