If you are preparing a vehicle for an expedition, reliability is everything, a mechanical failure in the UK could be sorted by calling out the AA. The same failure in the middle of the bush could be much more serious.

The diagram below illustrates the simplicity of the H12 Power Steering Pump drive system. It's the principle of hydraulic-driven winches and the uncomplicated nature of this system that make it so dependable. A winch system you can have confidence in to work when needed. Although this setup is very slow when running from a Land Rover steering pump, many other 4x4's are fitted with higher output pumps which enable the winch to run faster with higher line speed.

This particular H12 system is not fast, with a no-load line speed of 9 metres/minute and a loaded speed of around 1.5metres/minute. However, on an expedition vehicle in a critical recovery scenario, this is irrelevant and merely means few extra minutes of time, which is no big deal when you consider the considerable reliability advantage. Plus you have the advantage over an electric winch of being able to run your air-con, lights, wipers, heaters, etc. with confidence whilst you are winching, without the risk of running out of battery reserve.

We supply a Power Steering Pump winch system for all Land Rover Defender, Discover 1, and Range Rover Classic. The winch can also be adapted to run on most off-road vehicles from the vehicle's steering pump, but we do not supply winch mounts for other vehicles.
