Stage 4 - The  Type R System

 The History.

Our H12 Type R concept was developed for winch-challenge competition use. The characteristics of hydraulic winches suit the high performance levels that are demanded. Although based on our standard PTO driven winch, the winch performance and the drive system are dramatically uprated. The target speed was 100ft/min under load, and that's exactly what was achieved.

"Type R" stands for rapid, which in comparison to electric winches is a gross understatement. With a line speed of 50 ft/min at 1000rpm, 100ft at 2000rpm and so on, how could it be beaten by a battery powered winch?

Like other competiton/challenge winches the H12 Type R has a big deep drum, which is crucial in preventing jamming when the drum gets close to full of rope and the winch is running fast. The line speed is fast, but unlike battery powered winches, the Type R, doesn't slow down under load, or burn out it's motor or solenoids half way through an event, it just keeps going.

Like other high speed winches the the Type R generates heat, but unlike what is an air-insulated electric motor, it dissipates the heat through efficient radiation from constantly circulating fluid, and an aluminium oil tank with a huge surface area.

Testing.

The early initial testing simply started with a brakes-on drag test. First, a set of old tyres were fitted to a Defender 90, and the winch proceeded to pull the 90 on the tarmac with all four wheels locked. After six full 90ft pulls, each comprising of a 52 second pull, drive-back and repeat, the hydraulic fluid temperature only reached 50c. After the very heavy 540ft pull, which took only 6 minutes, the only damage was 4 hexagonal tyres.

The next stage was to fit six winches to different vehicles for thorough testing in the field.

Ladoga Trophy.

The Type R was then used in a couple of UK challenge events, and with no serious problems was prepared for Ladoga Trophy. The Ladoga Trophy is a 9 day event around a Russian lake, and is arguably the toughest event in the world, and during the many hours of hard winching, the Type R never faultered.

Still Performing.

Now, three years later The Type R is providing top quality performance on many winch challenge trucks right across Europe.

Technology.

The performance levels of the Type R are provided by the high specification components in the drive system. Nothing is left to chance, either in the quality or specification of the drive system. This philosophy is applied right through the drive system, from the huge high-pressure hydraulic pump, the CNC-machined power take off assembly through to the hand-built modular control valve, over-centre valve, and of course the hydraulic winch motor itself.

The performance and reliability of theType R have yet to be surpassed, it is unique among hydraulic winch systems.

Your vehicle.

As we build the winches and systems here, and the type of vehicle they are fitted to vary so widely, a Type R system can be built and supplied to fit your own vehicle. As an example, some users fit the pump to run from the engine's crankshaft in place of using the PTO system. In that case we can supply the necessary anti-clockwise rotating hydraulic pump to fit your pump carrier. You may want to buy a part-system so that you can integrate it with your vehicle's specific design, or maybe just the winch on its own so that you can integrate it with an existing hydraulic system, that's fine too.
