Shadow Galvanized Bumpers

GALVANIZED BUMPERS

All our Bumpers are designed and manufactured in the UK

For the ultimate in corrosion resistance Hot Dipped Galvanizing takes some beating. The galvanizing process basically involves immersing the item into a bath of molten zinc. All our bumpers are available in a galvanized finish. We stock the more popular bumpers and others are available by 'special order'.

Galvanized bumpers are particularly popular for commercial applications or for similar situations where the bumper will be working in a harsh environment. The whole purpose of galvanizing is to prevent corrosion, with this in mind the surface finish can be sometimes uneven and less visiually appealing than a conventional powder coated bumper. All our galvanizing is carried out to BS EN ISO 1461.

So what is Galvanizing?

1.Surface Preparation

2.Degreasing/Caustic Cleaning

A hot alkaline solution removes dirt, oil, grease, shop oil, and soluble markings.

3.Pickling

Dilute solutions of either hydrochloric or sulfuric acid removes surface rust and mill scale to provide a chemically clean metallic surface.

4.Fluxing

Items are immersed in liquid flux (usually a zinc ammonium chloride solution) to remove oxides and to prevent oxidation prior to dipping into the bath of molten zinc. In the dry galvanizing process, the item is separately dipped in a liquid flux bath, removed, allowed to dry, and then galvanized. In the wet galvanizing process, the flux floats atop the molten zinc and the item passes through the flux immediately prior to galvanizing.

5.Galvanizing

The article is immersed in a bath of molten zinc between 815-850 F (435-455 C). During galvanizing, the zinc metallurgically bonds to the steel, creating a series of highly abrasion-resistant zinc-iron alloy layers, commonly topped by a layer of impact-resistant pure zinc.

6.Finishing

After the steel is withdrawn from the galvanizing bath, excess zinc is removed by draining, vibrating or—for small items—centrifuging. The galvanized item is then air-cooled or quenched in liquid.

N.B. Bumpers across our range can be specified in Hot Dipped Galvanized Finish to BS EN ISO 1461. Please be aware before ordering, that this an 'industrial' finish. The nature of the process can sometimes produce a random surface finish and, as the galvanizing is carried out a a commercial Galvanizing Plant, we have no direct control of the process, therefore 'Special order' galvanized bumpers cannot be considered for return or refund for issues concerning the appearance of the surface, as the British Standard to which they are galvanized priroizes rust prevention properties rather than surface appearance .
